CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago man accused of defrauding more than 100 people has been ordered to stop operating mortgage and home repair businesses and to pay about $660,000 in restitution and fees.
Cook County Judge David Atkins granted a permanent injunction last week against Mark Diamond and one of his companies, United Residential.
The Illinois Attorney General’s office sued Diamond for the first time more than three decades ago, saying he took money for home repairs that were never done.
Attorney General Lisa Madigan says Diamond has altered his scheme over the years as he continued to scam people. She says most of his victims have been older, poor and African-American and live on Chicago’s south and west sides.
Diamond and his attorney have called the proceedings a “circus” and denied wrongdoing.
