JEFFERSON COUNTY — Two Dix residents are being held in the Jefferson County jail, charged in connection with a complaint they were extorting money from someone on Craigslist.
According to police, 20-year-old Taylor Colbert and 23-year-old Nicholas Duncan, both of Dix, turned themselves into the Jefferson County Sheriff’s office.
The Sheriff’s office says that around 2:23 Thursday, a victim reported being extorted for money from someone on Craigslist. The offenders from craigslist had demanded them to meet at Mt.Vernon Walmart and bring an undisclosed amount of cash.
Jefferson County Detectives along with MVPD Detectives set up an undercover sting operation at approximately 5:30 p.m. Thursday in a Mt. Vernon Walmart parking lot.
After the money exchange, JCSO Detectives approached the front of the offender’s car and an MVPD Detective pulled behind the offender to box them in.
The offender placed the vehicle in reverse and struck the MVPD vehicle. The driver then came forward at a high rate of speed and two JSCO Detectives had to jump out of the front of the vehicle to avoid being struck.
The vehicle was able to speed through the parking lot and managed to escape detectives, who were able to identify the suspects and started checking some known residences around the County.
At approximately 11 p.m., Colbert and Duncan entered the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and turned themselves into deputies.
Colbert and Duncan are facing Theft and Intimidation charges. More charges are pending the completion of the investigation. Both are being held at the Jefferson County jail with formal charges remaining to be filed and bail to be set.
