WHITTINGTON, Ill. (AP) — State officials say they’ve terminated the lease agreement of a southern Illinois lake resort and conference center, closed the facility and are seeking a new operator due to safety concerns.

However, other issues could hamper when the Rend Lake Resort and Conference Center reopens

The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan reports there’s a dispute over ownership of a building and area legislators are pushing state money for capital projects. But it’s unavailable with the impasse.

The Department of Natural Resources cited health and safety hazards including mold. The termination follows a notice last month that the resort was delinquent in rent and lease payments totaling over $200,000.

The center opened in 1990 and has 104 rooms, suites and cabins adjoining the late. It’s located at Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park in Whittington.
