WAYNE COUNTY — An 18-year-old Fairfield Community High School student was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon after the Kia Sportage she was driving crashed into the rear of a stopped school bus east of Fairfield

Tayia Sandiford was reportedly traveling eastbound around 3:15 p.m. on Ill. Rt. 15 east of Fairfield when she failed to stop for a Fairfield High School bus that had stopped to drop off a passenger.

Wayne County Sheriff’s Office reports there were six passengers on the bus along with the driver, 48-year-old Stephen Mason, who all escaped injury.

Sandiford’s car caught fire after impact. The bus driver extinguished the fire before local firefighters arrived.

Sandiford was taken to Fairfield Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries suffered in the accident.  She was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
