JACKSON COUNTY — A 23-year-old Carbondale woman was scheduled to submit a plea Thursday in the Jackson County case charging her with the death of a former Salem woman and the concealment of the woman’s remains.

Rather than submit a plea, Tiesha Anderson instead pushed her public defense counsel to withdraw.

Prosecutors say Anderson and two others beat Robin Stief to death then burned her body in a trash can in a wooded area of Carbondale.

Lauren Stinde, of Murphysboro, has already pleaded guilty to murdering Stief and the concealment of her death and awaits sentencing. Robert J. Dennis has pleaded not guilty and is scheduled for a January 19, fitness hearing.

Stief’s burned remains were found in a wooded area in the 900 block of East Main Street in Carbondale on Aug. 30, 2016. According to a Carbondale Police investigation, Stief had associated with the three shortly before her death.

Anderson’s court-appointed defense attorney entered a motion to withdraw, saying Anderson had filed a letter with the Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Committee calling his competency into question.

He denied the validity of Anderson’s complaint but said it would be best for the court to appoint a new attorney, as the letter to the ARDC creates a conflict.

Prosecutors support the defense attorney’s statements, calling Anderson’s actions a “delay tactic.”
