JEFFERSON COUNTY — A 45-year-old Centralia man was killed Wednesday morning after he was struck by a pickup truck while walking on U.S. 51 south of the Marion County line.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Daniel Rivera was pronounced dead at the scene early Wednesday morning.
Reports indicate the 47-year-old Centralia man who was allegedly driving the pickup truck left the scene but was later found and arrested.
Michael Gibson was taken to the Jefferson County Jail on charges of leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving, and failure to render aid.
Gibson was charged Thursday in Jefferson County Court with driving while license revoked from a DUI for the second time – a Class 4 felony — and with misdemeanor failure to render aid. His bail was set at $50,000 and he was released after posting $5,000 cash bond.
Gibson is next due in court December 17 for a preliminary hearing and a first appearance with his lawyer. He’s indicated he’ll be hiring a private attorney.
The sheriff’s department says foggy conditions Wednesday could have contributed to the accident that was reported shortly after midnight Wednesday morning.
Rivera had apparently had a flat tire on his vehicle and was walking back to Centralia for help when he was struck and killed.
