CHICAGO (AP) — The governor of Illinois says a new system built to handle unemployment claims from independent contractors and people typically unable to get benefits can handle the expected demand.
Illinois and other states have struggled to keep up with the enormous need for unemployment aid. Roughly 33 million Americans have filed since early March.
State unemployment agencies also had to establish a system for claims filed by people typically ineligible for aid, including contractors and those who are self-employed.
Gov. J.B. Pritzker said Thursday that Deloitte created the new system, which will be ready for those applications starting Monday.
