PERRY COUNTY — A 43-year-old Centralia man accused of shooting at police in a multi-county pursuit in 2018 entered an open plea of guilt Friday in Perry County Court in a combined agreement with both Perry and Washington counties.
Nathan Johnson was accused of taking police in DuQuoin on a pursuit through Perry County and into Washington County in August 2018 where he reportedly fired multiple shots at officers during the chase.
The pursuit ended at Johnson’s rural Centralia home on Irvington Road where he reportedly continued firing at police during an hours-long standoff, ultimately striking a Centralia officer’s squad car.
Johnson was charged with multiple Class M and Class X felony charges in Washington and Perry counties but pleaded guilty Friday to two Class X charges in Perry County and two charges in Washington County.
It’s unclear at this time what charges he pleaded guilty to in Washington County. However, he was facing Class X felony aggravated discharge of a firearm at a police officer and three Class 4 felony counts of aggravated assault in pointing a laser device at law enforcement.
In exchange for Johnson’s guilty plea, prosecutors agreed Friday to cap Johnson’s sentence at 35 years but he will have to serve 85 percent of any sentence he receives. He’s scheduled to be sentenced October 2 in Perry County Court.
