MARION COUNTY — A 67-year-old Vernon man is accused in Marion County Court of multiple offenses including the attempted kidnapping of a child in Kinmundy.

Ronnie Crawford was formally charged in one case Friday with Class 1 felony kidnapping, Class 4 felony child abduction, misdemeanor violation of an order of protection, driving under the influence of alcohol, DUI alcohol, unlawful possession of cannabis, and carrying alcohol as a driver.

In a separate case, he’s charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, unlawful possession of cannabis by a driver, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, expired registration, and transporting alcohol by a driver.

According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, a Kinmundy mom was watching her three-year-old child play in the front yard of their home in the 7500 block of Farthing Road in Kinmundy when she saw an older man in a truck pull up in front of the house and try to get the child to come to him. The mother screamed and the man jumped into his truck and fled.

Witnesses reportedly followed the truck eastbound on Kinoka Road from Jones Road and were able to inform sheriff’s deputies of the license plate number. They last saw the truck traveling on Farthing Road at Tank Farm.

Deputies located Crawford pulling up to his home on Burks Road in Vernon. According to the sheriff’s department, Crawford’s wife took out a protection order against him due to a separate incident Thursday that prohibited him from being at that property.

Deputies then took Crawford into custody on charges of attempted kidnapping and child abduction, along with DUI and related charges and possession of less than 30 grams of cannabis.

Crawford was taken to the Marion County Jail with bond set at $75,000. If able to post 10% cash bail, he’s prohibited from having contact with the alleged victim, her home, school, or daycare.

The court raised a bona fide doubt as to Crawford’s mental fitness and an evaluation was ordered. The case is set for status on the evaluation on September 6.
