CENTRALIA — Marion County Coroner Troy Cannon has released the name of the worker killed in a trench collapse Monday morning in Centralia.

Cannon says 54-year-old Darrell McCammack, of rural Brownstown, was reportedly covered with dirt when one wall of the trench at East Kerr Street and North Poplar in Centralia collapsed. McCammack was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second worker in the trench was also reportedly covered during the collapse but was freed more quickly, says Cannon. The injured worker was taken to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment. His name has not been released.

The men worked for a private company.

It was not immediately clear why the large trench across both lanes of Kerr Street had been opened.

Cannon says Centralia City Fire, Centralia Police, and Lifestar Ambulance personnel worked to save the two men along with their co-workers.

The trench collapse occurred at ten Monday morning.
