Joe G. Wilks, 74, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 4:00 PM on December 14, 2022 at his residence with his family by his side.

He was born August 19, 1948 in Du Quoin, Illinois to the late William A. Wilks and Alice “Pat” Dean Morris. Joe married Darla Wilson in September of 1970. She preceded him in death on December 22, 2016. Joe then married Phyllis L. Wilks (Hilliard) on November 27, 2019. She survives.

In addition to his wife, Phyllis, he is survived by his children, William Joseph (BJ) Wilks of Mount Vernon, Jonathan Wilks of Mount Vernon; sister, Janet Marie Kirk and husband, Danny of Du Quoin; niece, Sara Kirk and husband, Kendell, and one nephew, Mandan Kirk.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Darla.

Joe was a graduate of Du Quoin High School and graduated with honors from St. Louis College of Pharmacy. He owned and operated Lincolnshire Pharmacy in Mount Vernon. Joe was a member of First United Methodist Church in Mount Vernon where he was active with United Methodist Men and Angels on Assignment. He was a member of Rotary West in Mount Vernon, Mount Vernon Lodge #31, AF   AM Jefferson County Shrine Club and the Patton Commandery. Joe was awarded Jefferson County Senior Saint in 2022. He was a long time member of the Whipporwill Club where he was known as “Captain Joe”. There, Joe and his family made good friends and many memories. He was an avid fisherman and upon retirement, he tried to fish as much as possible. Joe was a friend to many and did so much good for his community and his presence will be greatly missed.

A Visitation will be held Monday, December 19, 2022 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at First United Methodist Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Service will begin at 7:00 pm with Reverend Victor Long officiating.  Memorials may be made in Joe’s honor to Angel’s on Assignment.
