MOUNT VERNON — The Mt. Vernon City Council approved increasing the number of restaurant liquor licenses Monday night in preparation for a possible new restaurant.

According to City Manager Mary Ellen Bechtel, the City did not have any licenses available and a restaurant that would need a liquor license is considering opening a location in Mt. Vernon.

The council unanimously approved amending the liquor license ordinance Monday by an increase of one to be prepared in case it’s needed.

An ordinance was also approved to prohibit parking on North Street, Peek Street, North Last Street, South Last Street, East Last Street, and Rufus Street.

As the lowest bidder on two projects, Groundworks Contracting Inc., in Breese, was awarded contracts for clearing utility easements and for work on the Lake Street and Pavey Avenue Sanitary Sewer Replacement Project.

Jacob Sanabia, with Holland Contracting, gave an update on the construction of the new Mt. Vernon Police Station.

According to Sanabia, the building will be ready for its dedication and Grand Opening the first week of July.

He told the council that while the facility will be ready to move in at the end of June, there will be some finishing items left to complete after the Grand Opening.
