CENTRALIA — The Centralia community will have one less option for filling prescriptions next month when the CVS store on North Poplar will close its doors.

According to Matt Blanchette, Senior Manager of Retail Communications with CVS, the Centralia store will close on September 6, but all prescriptions will be transferred to the CVS Pharmacy inside Schnucks on West Broadway.

Blanchette says Aetna Better Health of Illinois Medicaid members can choose to fill their prescriptions at any nearby in-network pharmacy location convenient for them. But prescriptions will be transferred to the pharmacy inside Schnucks until a selection is made.

CVS announced Tuesday it’s laying off about 5,000 employees in a cost-cutting effort. In 2021, CVS announced it was closing 900 stores nationwide, amounting to nearly 10% of its footprint, in response to the changing of “consumer buying patterns.”

We’ve reached out to the City of Centralia for comment and will update this story when they respond.
