MOUNT VERNON — Evelyn Louise Nordin, 96, a long-time resident of Mt. Vernon, died Wednesday, August 2 at Ranson Ridge Assisted Living & Memory Care, in Charlotte, NC.

She was born, on September 16, 1926 in Waltonville, IL, the daughter of John and Lula (Newbury) Bushong.  She was preceded by death by her parents, her ex-husband and father of her children, Roy Clarence Nordin, her long-term partner David Capps, and her many siblings: Opal, Leia, Hazel, Ruth, Raymond, Kenneth, Arthur, Virgil, Joseph, and William.

She is survived by her two daughters and their husbands:  Ruth Ann (Nordin) and Ron Krueger, and Carolyn Nordin Bushong and Alan Errickson.  She is also survived by her grandson, Brett Krueger, and great-grandson, Cameron Krueger (both in Charlotte, NC). Also survived are niece Jeanne Hale and nephew Ray Bushong (Waltonville), and niece Glenda Johnson and nephews Mike Nordin and David Nordin of Mt. Vernon, as well as many other relatives and friends who loved her.

Most people in Mt. Vernon knew her from working for years in the Boy’s Department of the Mammoth Department Store.  She in fact had waited on Ron, calling him “that cute little Krueger boy,” before Ruth met him and married him.  She also had become a hairdresser later in life, among other jobs.

Evelyn was also President of the American Legion Auxiliary for Gold Star Mothers years ago, and her two daughters say she was the best mother ever.  The two sisters agree, “Though money was tight back then, mom made many sacrifices so that we had more opportunities like swimming trips, great clothes, majorettes, dance & voice lessons.”

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., with visitation starting at noon, Monday, August 7 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon officiated by Pastor Randy Steel.  She will be buried at Knob Prairie Cemetery in Waltonville, IL.

Hospice was a blessing to Evelyn and her family at the end of her life in North Carolina and the family suggests that memorials may be made to Hospice and will be accepted at the funeral home or mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864.  You may also call the funeral home at 618-242-3348 or visit www.hughey-funeralhome1969.com <http://www.hughey-funeralhome1969.com> for further information and to send condolences.
