MOUNT VERNON — James W. “Augie” Augustine, 81, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away on December 23, 2023 at his residence. He was born September 2, 1942 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Walter and and Irene (Karabcik) Augustine. James married Dolores Marie Smith on June 5, 1965 in Cleveland, Ohio. They were blessed with forty-eight years of marriage before she preceded him in death on June 26, 2013.

James is survived by his daughters, Alicia Augustine-Griffith of Maryville, Illinois and Maret Visser and husband, Glen of Mount Vernon, Illinois and grandsons, Max and Samuel Visser, both of Mount Vernon, Illinois.

In addition to his parents and wife, James was preceded in death by his brothers, John and Richard; brother-in-law, Michael Smith;  and son-in-law, John Griffith.

Mr. Augustine proudly served his country in the United States Army during this time, he served on the honor guard for President Lyndon Johnson. James worked and retired as a photo engraver. He also worked as the original shuttle driver for Good Samaritan Hospital. He was a member of Saint Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and an avid Cleveland Indians and Browns fan. James was a loving father, grandfather, and was crazy about his grandsons. He never missed a game they played in. James will be dearly missed.

A Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 2, 2024 from 9:00 am to 10:00 am at Saint Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Mass will begin at 10:00 am with Father Benny George officiating. Full Military Rites will be held at the cemetery by Mount Vernon American Legion Post #141. Interment will follow at St. Mary Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Illinois. Memorials may be made in James’ honor to St. Mary School.
