MOUNT VERNON — Katherine “Kathy” J. Baltzell, 62, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 11:25 pm February 9, 2024 at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon surrounded by her loving family. She was born October 20, 1961 in Mount Vernon, Illinois to the late Jack L. and Ramona J. (Richardson) Flanagan. Kathy married Jesse Baltzell on October 29, 1999.

In addition to her beloved husband of twenty-four years, Kathy is survived by her daughters, Amy Povolish and husband, Ryan of Sesser, Illinois and Jennifer Scarber of Mount Vernon, Illinois; son, Danny Scarber and wife, Erica of Mount Vernon, Illinois; grandchildren, Haley Chelf and special friend, Zach, Bryson Karch, Madyson Karch and fiancé, Cam, Cayson Karch, Remington Povolish, Aaron Scarber, and Averie Scarber; great-grandchildren, Dre, Reign, Brylon, Amaliya, Daisy, Hudson, and one due in September; sister, Angie Campbell and husband, Steve of Mount Vernon, Illinois; brothers, Dennis Flanagan and wife, Paula of Salem, Illinois and Tim Flanagan of Salem, Illinois; sister-in-law, Kathy Byars and husband, Craig of Mount Vernon, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Kathy was preceded in death by her brother, Lewis Flanagan and parents-in-law, Vera and Jim Fisher.

Kathy worked at Green Tree in Mount Vernon as the activity director for many years. She had a passion to work with and help elderly people. Kathy loved to shop, read, go camping, and attend car shows with her husband. Above all, she loved her family and will be greatly missed.

A Visitation will be held Tuesday, February 13, 2024 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Graveside Service will be held Wednesday, February 14, 2024 at 10:30 am at Middle Creek Cemetery in Dahlgren, Illinois with Pastor James McKinzie officiating. Interment will follow. Memorials may be made in Katherine’s honor to the Alzheimer’s Association.
