WOODLAWN, Ill. — A small earthquake struck a region between Woodlawn and Richview Thursday night.

According to the United States Geological Survey, around 8:05 p.m., Thursday a 2.25 magnitude struck just over 4 miles northwest of Woodlawn and east of Richview.

This makes the fifth earthquake in Southern Illinois since November, with a 2.8 magnitude striking Germantown in Clinton County on March 28; a 2.5 magnitude quake on March 5 in Pinckneyville; a 3.1 struck near Standard in Putnam County on December 18; and a 3.6 magnitude shook that same area near Standard on November 15.

Thursday’s quake rattled while the area was experiencing strong thunderstorms and was under the threat of possible tornadoes.
