Mount Vernon, IL — United Way of South Central Illinois has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the Illinois Charitable Trust Stabilization Fund, administered by the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office. Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs personally visited United Way’s office on July 9 to present the award in recognition of the organization’s ongoing work to address barriers to employment across Southern Illinois.
The funds will support two large-scale Employment and Resource Fairs — one in Mt. Vernon and one in Salem — designed to connect job seekers with local employers, training opportunities, and support services such as childcare, transportation, and financial literacy.
“These events are about more than handing out applications,” said Natalie “Nat” Shook, Executive Director of United Way of South Central Illinois. “We’re focused on removing barriers and creating real opportunity. Whether someone needs resume help or legal assistance, we want it all available under one roof.”
United Way is partnering with the Greater Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, Greater Centralia Chamber of Commerce, and Greater Salem Illinois Chamber of Commerce to co-host and organize the events.
As part of this initiative, United Way is also exploring the inclusion of expungement clinics, where individuals with certain non-violent criminal records — such as minor drug charges — could begin the process of clearing their record with the help of legal professionals.
This component is meant to expand access to meaningful employment for individuals who are often excluded due to past offenses.
“It’s important to note that not everyone qualifies for expungement,” Shook emphasized. “But for those who do, this can be life-changing — and a huge benefit to employers who need dedicated, reliable workers.”
The Greater Salem Illinois Chamber of Commerce expressed strong support for the initiative and the impact it can have in Marion County and beyond.
“The Greater Salem Area Chamber of Commerce is honored to partner with United Way of South Central Illinois and our neighboring chambers on this transformative initiative. This employment and resource fair is a shining example of how collaboration fuels progress — not only by connecting people with job opportunities, but by addressing the real-life challenges that often stand in the way of success. Together, we’re investing in the long-term growth, resilience, and vitality of our regional communities.”
— Jessiycka Coleman, Executive Director, Greater Salem Area Chamber of Commerce
Venue planning is underway in both Mt. Vernon and Salem, with efforts to secure spaces large enough to accommodate employers, service providers, and expungement support areas.
Event dates, locations, and participation details will be released soon.
