MT. VERNON, IL — The Senior Saints Hall of Fame program exists to recognize and thank the senior citizens in Jefferson County who selflessly give back to their community through volunteerism and generosity. While countless numbers benefited from their dedication and efforts, few knew those directly responsible for the programs and benefits they enjoyed.  Many of these individuals have shied from the public spotlight choosing to serve quietly and unnoticed. This is their time to be recognized.

The Senior Saints Committee, along with main sponsor Deaconess Illinois Crossroads, the City of Mt. Vernon, and the Jefferson County Board, are pleased to welcome the following heroes into the Senior Saints Hall of Fame:

Phillip “Mike” Beard is lovingly known by many as “Mr. Mt. Vernon,” and has earned the title through decades of committed community service. Whether it be Rotary Club, The Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, or First United Methodist Church, he has invested a great deal of heart into his membership. After serving in the United States Army and a successful insurance career, Mike used his professionalism and talents to truly exemplify the motto “service above self.” A nominator stated, “he is a familiar face at nearly every community event – be it a ribbon cutting, a chamber event, a local fundraiser, or a volunteer drive. His presence brings both credibility and enthusiasm, and it’s hard to imagine an event in Jefferson County that Mike hasn’t helped shape or support in some way. Simply put, when something good is happening in Mt. Vernon, Mike Beard is never far away.”

She has been an active and pivotal member of SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary. She uses her talents and gifts as a seamstress to create “comfort bears” for the pediatric and dementia patients. She also sews Christmas stockings for newborns that arrive during the holiday season. In times where bereaved parents are grieving the loss of a newborn at the hospital, Zella makes them personalized receiving blankets to memorialize their children. She has served as an officer on the Auxiliary Board of Directors and is currently serving as the Historian. A nominator stated, “Zella is a blessing and a person who loves to make a positive difference in the lives of others.” Another said, “She is always willing to go above and beyond; quietly and without seeking recognition. I recommend her without reservation for the honor of Senior Saint.”

One of her sons wrote in a nomination letter, “Throughout my life, my mother has taught me, in both words and by her example, the importance of giving back to your community and caring for others. In my adult life I have always tried to serve others wherever possible, and I owe that trait to my mom above all others. She is very deserving of the honor of being named a Senior Saint.”

Whether through his faithful involvement in church ministries, his leadership in education, or his many behind-the-scenes acts of kindness, he displays humility, grace, and purpose. Don’s life is a testimony that displays love for God, neighbors, and for this country.”

Dennis “Denny” Litton is described by many as not only a dedicated EMT, but one of the best emergency medical technicians to have ever held the title. As the previous owner of Litton Ambulance Service, Denny spent many years being the go-to expert for emergency care and compassion. He went on to serve as a medic for the city, county and state, as well as training other EMT’s at high levels. Born and raised in Jefferson County, Denny knows just about everyone. And many of those individuals have a story about how Denny saved their life or how he volunteered his time and efforts to ensuring members of the community were safe. Ballgames, county festivals, and more – Denny was a familiar face in attendance, ready to spring into action if the need arose. His son wrote, “I have a lifetime of reminders of the difference my father has made for Jefferson County. His dedication to this community has been demonstrated over decades through his altruism, engagement, commitment, pride, and compassion.”

Dr. Yagnesh Oza is a name synonymous with care and compassion. As a young man who came to America with only six dollars to his name and a dream to help others, his determination became evident very quickly. His vision of providing top-notch healthcare became a reality, and he served as a beloved physician for many years. He is known for his commitment to bringing hospice care to the community, serving as the first Hospice Director in Jefferson County and helping countless families ensure their loved ones were treated with dignity and respect. Later, he spearheaded the cancer treatment program at Good Samaritan Hospital and partnered with SSM to start the “Oza Cancer Center.”  Outside of his work, Dr. Oza has volunteered with numerous charitable organizations, sponsored scholarships, hosted food drives, made emergency medical equipment donations to the local fire department, and provided hundreds of free holiday meals to those in need. One nominator stated, “Jefferson County has been blessed to have Dr. Oza as a physician and a community member. His service, compassion, and achievements have not only earned this nomination for a Senior Saint, but also earned the respect and gratitude of those who know him.”

James Scott began a life of service in one of the most noble ways. Drafted into the United States Army in 1958, James was stationed in Southern Germany where he worked his way up the ranks to Corporal. After adjusting back to civilian life, James found a calling to positively impact his local community through volunteerism. Serving as a 25-year integral figure in the Bluford Ruritan Club, he helps with countless fundraisers, meals, community events, and needs. As a farmer, he often helps others to harvest their crops, as he knows all too well how quickly life can change and how difficult it is for farmers to manage season to season. In the winter, you might find him blading driveways for numerous neighbors. He always seems to be there to lend a helping hand. A nominator stated, “his integrity, dedication, and compassionate heart make him an invaluable asset to our community.”

She also spent a great deal of time working hard as a volunteer for Cathy’s Cottage and with Sleep in Heavenly Peace, both being ministries that provided beds and furniture to those in need. This required a lot of heavy lifting – literally and figuratively – but Sonja never shied away from the commitment. She is also a recognized blood donor, having donated nearly 70 times. Whether it be helping to transport community members to doctors’ appointments or enlisting her grandchildren’s help in serving others through hard work, Sonja is passionate about making a lasting impact. A nominator wrote, “Sonja is the embodiment of a Senior Saint: love, compassion, service, strength, patriotism, loyalty…and all without seeking recognition. She and her beautiful smile represent our county well.”
