Homer Ray Baker, 83, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 10:46 am December 29, 2025 at his home. He was born October 10, 1942 in Mount Vernon to the late Alfred James and Vera May (Robertson) Baker.
Homer married Doris Ann (Martin) Baker on August 11, 1962 in Shawneetown, Illinois. She preceded him in death on July 17, 2016.
Homer is survived by his sons, Martin Quint Baker and wife, Allison Baker of Sacramento, CA; James “Jimmy” Micah Baker, and wife, Tonya Sue Baker of Lebanon, Illinois; and Andrew Corey Baker of Taipei, Taiwan. One Grandson, Jared Thomas Baker of Lebanon, Illinois. Two sisters, Caroline Sue Johnson and husband, Charles of Morris, Illinois, and Rhonda Kay West and husband, Danny Joe of Oakland, Illinois. Special friend, Jolene Wells; as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Homer was preceded in death by three siblings, James Layton Baker, Mildred Anne “Mimi” Jones, and Helen Lorraine Tripp.
Homer was a welder by trade. He worked for A.L. Lee and later worked under his own label: Baker’s Welding. Homer was a member of the Jefferson County Masonic Lodge #368 in Mount Vernon and served as caretaker of Sursa Cemetery for many years. He loved fishing and skeet shooting. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
A Graveside Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, January 14, 2026 at 2:00 pm at Sursa Cemetery in Mount Vernon with Mr. Michael Sheets officiating. Memorials may be made in Homer’s honor to Angels on Assignment.
