
Edwina Carol Wilkerson, 77, of Avon, In passed away on February 17, 2026 surrounded by family at home. She was born on June 20, 1948 in Doniphan, MO to Edward S. & Joyce (Halcomb) Guilliams. On May 29, 1964 she married her high school sweetheart, John Wilkerson, who preceded her in death. Together, they raised two children in St. Jacob, IL before moving back to Mt. Vernon, IL and finally to Avon, IN to be nearer to their daughter.
Edwina was a talented hobby artist that presented and sold paintings locally. She had a creative side with nature photography, home decorating, and flower arranging.
In St. Jacob, IL she served as a Sunday school teacher and on the audit committee for the St. Jacob Methodist Church. She was a Girl Scout/Brownie Leader, and she served as the Treasurer of the St. Jacob School Parent Teacher Association (PTA).
In Mt. Vernon, IL she volunteered for Good Samaritan Hospital and delivered for the Meals on Wheels program for over 10 years.
Edwina worked as an office assistant/secretary for Ralph Insurance Agency and Korte Construction (both of Highland, IL) and Southern Illinois University (SIU-E) in Edwardsville, then for St. Jacob Grade School (Triad district).
Edwina is survived by her two children: Sherri Wilkerson and Brent (Robyn) Wilkerson, 2 grandchildren: Cody (Nicole) Wilkerson and Ashley (Tiana) Wilkerson-Cruz, 5 great-grandchildren: Ryan, Zachary, Allison and Heather Wilkerson, and Edward Allen Bird; 2 sisters: Brenda Legg and Debbie (David) Crawford, and lots of nieces & nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John Wilkerson, and 2 sisters: Barbara Ann Guilliams and Patricia Kidd.
Funeral services for Edwina Carol Wilkerson will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2026 at the Archie Sanders Memorial Chapel in Wayne City, IL with Pastor Randy Steele officiating. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 1:00 pm until the time of the service at 2:00 p.m. at the chapel. Interment will follow the funeral service at Thomason Cemetery in Wayne City.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Edwina’s memory may be made to “SSM Health Foundation Southern Illinois” and write “SSM Health Cancer Care” on the memo line. Donations will be accepted at the service or at Young Funeral Home in Wayne City.
