CENTRALIA — A Sunday morning incident on South Sycamore Street in Centralia has landed a 28-year-old Boyd man in the Marion County jail after he allegedly threatened a person while he was armed with a machete.

John Kaufman was arrested for alleged drug and assault charges after allegedly threatening a Centralia resident while armed with a machete.

According to police, they responded to the home after Kaufman allegedly threatened to have people come shoot up the apartment.

Officers responding to the apartment around 3:50 a.m. Sunday reportedly found Kaufman walking nearby but he had already put down the machete.

The apartment’s occupant told officers she had earlier loaned Kaufman $20 and he had brought her his belongings as collateral until he could get her money.

When he returned to the apartment later he offered to give her the machete and later methamphetamine to cover the debt. However, Kaufman allegedly began making threats when his offers were declined.

Officers reportedly located the machete and a small container containing a small amount of a substance that field-tested positive for meth.
