JEFFERSON COUNTY — Two people were injured Friday morning in a crash on Interstate 57 in Jefferson County between a car and a semi.
According to Illinois State Police, around 7:25 a.m. Friday, 20-year-old Luis Sanchez, of St. Louis, was northbound on I-57 in a 2001 Ford Fusion when he became distracted by his GPS device and drifted into the lane occupied by a 2013 Kenworth 5-axle combination driven by 46-year-old Juan C. Landron, of Florida.
The Ford struck the left trailer tires of the Kenworth with its right front corner. The Ford came to rest in the median and the left lane was closed due to debris from the crash.
Sanchez and a 17-year-old female passenger, of Mt. Vernon, were taken to the hospital by ambulance for treatment of non-incapacitating injuries.
Two other passengers in the car and the driver of the semi were uninjured.
The left lane remained closed for approximately 1 hour for crash investigation and vehicle removal.
Sanchez was charged with Driving While License Suspended, Improper Lane Usage, and Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid a Crash. Sanchez posted bond and was released.
