WHITE COUNTY — Following the escape last weekend of three of his inmates, White County Sheriff Doug Maier has removed federal inmates from his jail until the 43-year-old facility can be made more secure.

Crews are in the process of filling every block with concrete so inmates can not break through the wall again.

Officials said the pipe used to bust through the wall was from a privacy curtain installed and required by a federal mandate. The jail did pass its last inspection by the Department of Corrections last December.

Maier has asked officials with the Illinois Department of Corrections to help review the circumstances surrounding the escape of three inmates from the facility.

One of the three escaped inmates was quickly apprehended, but 24-year-old Zachery Shock and 61-year-old Johnny Tipton remain at large. Shock was in jail awaiting trial for the murder of James Berkel, of Salem. Tipton was in jail on a theft charge.

Authorities received reports Thursday of two men who match the description of the escapees on a jon boat in the Ohio River.

They have also received reports of a stolen boat that matches the description. Kentucky authorities are now assisting with the search for the two fugitives who are considered dangerous.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Shock or Tipton is urged to call 911.
