MARION COUNTY — A 28-year-old Dix man has been arrested in connection with a high-speed pursuit New Year’s Day with Marion County Sheriff’s deputies.

Thomas Garrison was arrested Wednesday night and transported to the Marion County Jail on charges of aggravated fleeing, driving on a suspended license and possession of drug paraphernalia.

In addition to being issued a handful of traffic citations, Garrison was formally charged in Marion County court Thursday with Class 4 felony aggravated fleeing police at speeds exceeding 21 mph over the limit.

Garrison is accused of being the driver of an SUV deputies attempted to stop around 5 p.m. New Year’s Day on Route 161 near Raccoon School. Instead of stopping, however, the driver allegedly sped up and headed southbound on Interstate 57 with speeds reaching up to 110 miles per hour.

The SUV eventually took the Dix-Irvington Road exit before heading west to Boyd Lane and then Piedmont Road where the SUV jumped a ditch and drove into a field where the driver jumped from the vehicle and fled on foot into a wooded area.

A passenger who was in the SUV remained in the vehicle and after questioning was released and the SUV was impounded.
