SANDOVAL — The Marion County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a string of events Sunday morning in rural Sandoval that resulted in a man receiving a head injury when he reportedly broke up a burglary in progress when he returned home.
The homeowner reportedly became involved in an altercation with the suspect outside the home where the homeowner was injured with what was described as a graze on the forehead by a reported gunshot. He was taken to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment.
The incident occurred at a home on the Red Stripe Road just off of U.S. 51 south of Sandoval.
A male suspect was arrested short time later when deputies received a report of a man attempting to gain entry to a nearby home.
The suspect reportedly fled the second location on foot and into a field where he was attempting to hide when located and taken into custody by a sheriff’s deputy. No weapon has been found at this time.
Names are not yet being released as the incidents all remain under investigation. Deputies believe the suspect in custody was the only person involved in the incidents.
A third incident in the same area is also being investigated where an apparent attempt was made to steal a vehicle.
The initial call to 9-1-1 was made around 11:30 Sunday morning and reported a man had been shot at a home on Red Stripe Road when residents interrupted a burglary in progress to their home.
The second incident was reported just before 12:30 Sunday afternoon and the suspect was taken into custody a short time later.
The investigation into these incidents is ongoing.
