MOUNT VERNON — Mary Helen “Granny” Shaw, 98, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, went home into the loving arms of Jesus at 4:15 am July 14, 2023 at Centralia Manor.

She was born November 9, 1924 in Fairfield, Illinois to the late Delbert and Gula (Reames) Tucker. Mary married Bill Shaw on March 15, 1941 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. They were blessed with 42 years of marriage before his passing in December 1983.

Mary is survived by her sons, Reverend John Shaw and wife, Marilyn and Pastor Steve Shaw and wife, Kim of Peoria, Illinois; daughter, Karen Hails and husband, Doug of Centralia, Illinois; daughter-in-law, Norma Shaw of Mount Vernon, Illinois; grandchildren, Johnny Shaw, Scott Shaw, Joe Shaw, Tony Shaw, Josh Shaw, Rachel Shaw, Hannah Shaw, Matthew Hails and wife, Norma, and Sara Pendley and husband, Brian; great-grandchildren, Dana Brown, J.C. Brown, Amiya, Jackson Shaw, Tanner Shaw, Tori Shaw, and Amelia Pendley; sister, Shirley Caldwell of Sims, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by her children, Reverend Bill Shaw and Rebecca Shaw; granddaughter, Angie Brown; and siblings, Henrietta, Eleanor, Merle, and Aaron.

Mary retired as a registered nurse at Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon where she worked for many years. She was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Mary considered her flower garden to be therapy and always made it a point to spend time there, even if she wasn’t feeling well. Most of all, Mary loved the time she shared with her family, especially her grandchildren. She will be deeply missed.

A Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 19, 2023 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. A Funeral Service will begin at 12:00 pm with Pastor Steve Shaw officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn, Illinois. Memorials may be made in Mary’s honor to the Seventh Day Adventist Church or flowers will be lovingly appreciated.
