Social Security officially marks its 90th anniversary on August 14th. And, according to “A-A-R-P” Kentucky, it remains a cornerstone of financial security for more than a million of Kentuckians-generating about 20 billion dollars in economic activity, each year, through the commonwealth. “A-A-R-P Kentucky’s” volunteer state-president, Gary Adkins, explains why this year’s anniversary is so important—and what they are doing to celebrate it…
“Since 1935, Social Security has helped older Americans live and retire with dignity; supported people with disabilities; and provided vital income to families after the loss of a loved-one. It’s a promise that’s earned through a lifetime of hard work. In fact, a new ‘A-A-R-P’-poll finds that over nine-in-10 of all Americans consider Social Security vital to financial security—while two-thirds believe that it’s even more important for retirees than it was just five years ago. We thank Governor Beshear for his proclamation and support to protect Social Security from harmful changes—and to ensure that it remains strong for all of us. We’re also holding local events, around the commonwealth, to celebrate this important anniversary.”
