The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers about a Chinese-made cough liquid that contains morphine.

An FDA drug alert issued on Friday, Jan. 15 said the ‘Licorice Coughing Liquid’ has label information in Chinese and English, but the presence of morphine is not listed in English.

Consumers who are very sensitive to morphine could suffer from a severe allergic reaction if they take the syrup, according to the FDA.

The FDA recommends consumers should not take the syrup if they bought it.

This product is manufactured by Ma Ying Long Pharmaceutical Group in China and distributed in the U.S. by Master Herbs USA, Inc. in Pomona, Calif. The distributor has agreed to recall the product. This product is available on-line and in some retail stores.
The distributor said it will recall the liquid, according to the FDA.
Health care professionals and consumers should report adverse events related to the cough syrups to the FDA’s MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program at www.fda.gov/MedWatch/report or by calling 800-332-1088.
