CARTER COUNTY, Mo. — A 57-year-old Southern Illinois man has been arrested during a traffic stop in Missouri that resulted in sheriff’s deputies discovering nearly $2.5 million worth of illegal drugs in his vehicle.
Lowell E. Johnson, of Metropolis was pulled over for speeding in Carter County, Missouri. The reported odor of cannabis led to a search of Johnson’s vehicle, and the discovery of 873.5 pounds of cannabis, 2.4 pounds of cocaine, and 12.45 pounds of methamphetamine.
The street value of the recovered drugs is estimated at around $2.4 million.
Carter County Sheriff Rick Stephens said this is the largest drug bust he’s ever seen, possibly the largest in his county.
According to court documents, he told authorities he picked up the drugs in Arizona and planned to sell them to multiple locations in Missouri and Illinois.
