MOUNT VERNON — Betty F Richey, 90, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 8:03 am on Sunday, February 25, 2024 peacefully at her home.

She was born December 5, 1933 in Mount Vernon to the late Pearl and Ethel (Lipe) Phelps. Betty married William “Bill” Denton in Mount Vernon. They had three children: Susan, Mike, and Steve. Bill passed away October 1, 1994. Betty later married Gene Stilley and then Jack Richey.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Susan; grandchildren, Jacob Oglesby and wife, Shannon, Jerod Oglesby, and Stephen Denton; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Kimmy Sue Oglesby; stepchildren, John Richey, Marty Schultz, Randy Allan, and Steve Stilley; and many step-grandchildren.

Betty was the Catalog Manager at Sears for many years. Later, she worked at King City Savings and Good Samaritan Hospital until retirement.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her sons, Mike and Steve; and sister, Roberta Kelly.

Betty loved the outdoors, her flowers, and at one time, she had a very large garden. She loved to travel and enjoyed her stays in McAllen, Texas and Orange Beach, Alabama. She will sadly be missed by all who knew and loved her.

A Visitation will be held Thursday, February 29, 2024 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. A Funeral Service will begin at 12:00 pm with Pastor Tim Reynolds officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn, Illinois. Memorials may be made in Betty’s honor to the Alzheimer’s Association or American Heart Association.
